The First Special Service Force (FSSF) was a combined US/Canadian special mountain infantry unit formed early in WW2. Comprised of experienced woodsmen and outdoorsmen, the unit was trained to elite status in unconventional warfare, mountaineering, and hand to hand combat. After landing at Kiska only to find the Japanese gone, they shipped out for Italy, where they distinguished themselves by their skill and daring. Those "Forcemen" were issued a specially designed fighting knife produced by the legendary Case Cutlery Co. of Bradford, PA, based on the British Fairbairn-Sykes commando stiletto. The "V-42" featured a sleek double edge dagger blade, a wide guard, and a "skull crusher" pommel. It quickly came to symbolize the Force, and was even pictured on their regimental colors.
In the 1980s, the famous Jonathan Crookes & Son of Sheffield, England produced a faithful commemorative edition of the classic V-42. This Vintage 1980s J. CROOKES & SON SHEFFIELD US WW2 FSSF V-42 STYLE COMMEMORATIVE DAGGER is in near mint condition, with some light scattered age wear evident (See pictures).
